Science

Intent

• Prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world.

• Build on our children’s natural curiosity and develop a scientific approach to problems.

• Develop our children's enjoyment and interest in science by providing opportunities that engage all children in relevant, first-hand experiences.

• Foster, concern about, and active care for, our environment. 

• Encourage our children to investigate, question and discuss to acquire scientific knowledge, understanding, and skill.

• Teach scientific vocabulary and develop our children's understanding of key scientific concepts.

• Enable our children to make links between science and other subjects.

Implementation

• We use The Plymouth Scheme for our Science planning, this allows teachers to see the child's scientific learning journey from EYFS through to year 6 as well as ensuring all aspects of both the National Curriculum and EYFS 'Understanding the World' is covered.

•  We plan by having a question for learning to promote our children's curiosity.

• We ensure that our children are able to recall and retrieve prior learning through the use of 'entry tickets' at the start of lessons.

• We trust our teaching staff to use their own extensive knowledge of the science curriculum and creativity where they see fit to adapt or build upon lessons from The Plymouth Scheme - ensuring learning is suited to their individual children and classes.

• We plan opportunities for outdoor learning using our extensive forest school areas.

• We offer lots of exciting experiences for our children, from visitors who work in science to come into lessons to trips to London's Science Museum. 

Impact

Our children will

• demonstrate a love of science.

•  have a greater love for the environment and help care for it.

• retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context.

• question ideas and reflect on knowledge.

• articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically using rich language linked to science.

• demonstrate a high love of mathematical skills through their work, organising, recording and interpreting results.

• achieve age related expectations in Science at the end of their cohort year.
